There are approximately 32 hectares of natural forest featuring tree species such as Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Arbutus, Bigleaf Maple, Red Alder and Garry Oak. Two intermittent creeks run through the property, and two eagle nesting sites have been identified. The property also contains a wetland area known as Skipsey Lake, an open field and a network of walking trails.

How to get there
Take Northwest Bay Road (off either Hwy 19 or Hwy 19A) to Stewart Road. Follow Stewart Road to the end.

Located on Holden Lake south of Nanaimo, this forested park is popular with local residents, who mainly come here to explore the extensive trail system. The marsh area at Hemer Provincial Park is also a favourite destination for bird watchers and ornithologists. A viewing platform over the marsh, approximately 1 km from the parking lot, provides the opportunity to observe various types of ducks, Trumpeter swans, Bald eagles and turkey vultures, as well as beavers.
Approximately 11 kilometres of easy walking trails weave through the park along Holden Lake and through the marsh areas. The trails are forested, primarily with mature coastal Douglas fir, red alder and big-leaf maple. Trails are not marked but are easily identifiable and well maintained. Hemer Park provides day-use opportunities at Holden Lake, a peaceful setting for paddlers, boaters and anglers.

Directions: From the intersection of the Old Island Highway and the new Laburnum Road drive south to Claymore Road and turn right. Follow Claymore Road to the entrance to the Little Qualicum River Fish Hatchery (2.4 Km from the Old Island Hwy. to the entrance just after crossing the bridge over Whiskey Creek). Turn right into the Fish Hatchery or park on the road outside the gate if you expect to be leaving later than 4:00 P.M. There is a map of the fish hatchery, an outhouse, picnic tables and interpretive displays near the entrance. Continue through the parking area to a yellow gate between two interpretive signs. Follow the gravel road on top of the dyke for approximately 25 minutes to the end of the Spawning Channel. Follow the road to the left, along the chain link fence and by the yellow gate. Keep straight on the road as it passes an office/maintenance building, and continues through the Hatchery to the Fishery Viewing Room. Turn right and head up the road to the entrance gate.
