Buccaneer Beach

Great smelly masses of kelp and herring roe wash up on this beach in the middle of March.  During the herring run the population of Bald Eagles along this stretch of shore explodes.  The views out towards Denman, Hornby and Chrome Islands make this a scenic walk year round.  The walk can be a bit tricky in winter due to frequent beach creeks.

Directions:  While heading west on the Old Island Highway (19A), from Bowser to Deep Bay, turn right on Gainsburg Road.  Turn right on Kopina Drive, left on Longview Drive, and left on Shoreline Drive.  Drive to the turnaround with a bench near the end of Shoreline and park.  A new set of stairs lead down to the beach.

Walk east along the beach for approximately 35 minutes, and then cut over to the Buccaneer Beach Road near the bench.  Head up the hill and turn right at the top onto Maple Guard Drive.  Turn left on Jamieson Road, right on Bald Eagle Drive, right on Blue Heron Crescent, and left on Ocean Trail.  At the end of Ocean Trail take the path to the right that cuts over to West Thompson Clark Drive. Continue along Thompson Clark Drive and turn right on Seaview Drive.  Continue straight ahead from Seaview on to Shoreline Drive and return to the start.

Englishman River Estuary / Rathtrevor Park

P1000394
An alternate access to Rathtrevor Park, in case they ever start charging for parking again. Park at the intersection of Plummer Road and Shorewood Drive and follow the trail along Englishman River. The old boardwalk has been removed but there is a sketchy trail along the bank of the river. Alternatively follow Shorewood Drive to Mariner Way to get to beach access. At high tide it may be necessary to use other beach accesses to get around breakwaters people have built out into the intertidal zone.

Rathtrevor Park / Beach Resorts

P1000382

The start of this beach walk is from a beach access at the end of Arbutus Road at the south end of Parksville. The beginning is a cobble stone beach which may be a little slippery at high tide, but soon changes to the sandy beaches of Rathtrevor. At the interpretive Display turn into the park to access the washrooms and hike the trail around the marsh. Head up the access road and take the Top Bridge cutoff to Resort Drive. At the end of Resort Drive cut over to the Highway and stop in at Serious or Coyote Coffee before turning down Arbutus Road and returning to the beginning.
